The pasticcini and the genovesi of Erice

The pasticcini are delicacies which are only prepared with local ingredients, mainly almonds, but also honey, citron, oranges and lemons. The recipe was obtained thanks to the cloistered nuns of the old convents of San Carlo and Santa Teresa in Erice, who bequeathed their secrets to local confectioners. The genovesi, yet again invented by the Erice nuns, are round muffins made of shortcrust pastry and filled with ricotta or pastry cream and dusted over with a thin veil of sugar.
