They are made of colours and geometric shapes which render them unique. To date they are still manufactured in Erice following the ancient art of weaving on a frame loom, even if only a few handicraft workshops still exist which keep this tradition alive. The carpets’ main feature is their composition: besides skeins of cotton, motley-coloured scraps of cloth are also used to produce the characteristic geometric figures. This tradition hails from olden times, when the local women kept scraps of cloth from worn out and unusable clothes. Nowadays, besides performing their original function, they are hung up as ornamental tapestry in rural or modern houses.
